The Toy Library: Sustainable Play in the Heart of Clarksburg
Here’s the problem many families know too well: birthdays and holidays bring in new toys. Kids play with them for a while, then get bored. Suddenly, parents are left with piles of toys that take up space and eventually get tossed.
That cycle- buy, use a little, throw away- feels wasteful. Wouldn’t it be better if toys worked more like library books? You borrow what you want, try it out, and if you love it, you keep borrowing. If you don’t love it, you just return it- no clutter, no waste.
That simple thought turned into something new for our community: The Toy Library.
Here’s what it’s all about:
Play matters. Kids learn and grow through play. Having new toys to explore helps them develop in all kinds of ways.
Less waste. Sharing toys means fewer end up in the trash and less money spent on things kids outgrow.
Community. It brings families together. Instead of every household buying the same toy, we can share.
We didn’t have a toy library in our area, so a member of Clarksburg Church decided to start one right here in Clarksburg. Neighbors donated toys, volunteers helped clean and organize them, and now we’ve got shelves worth of toys ready for families to borrow- just like books from the library.
It’s small now, but it’s growing. And we’d love for you to be part of it.
